Jodi Oliver, Ph.D.

Dr. Oliver Vermaas is a doctoral-level counselor and counselor educator, licensed professional counselor with mental health services designation (for diagnostic services), and Krav Maga enthusiast. She began her life’s work in ministry with experiences in different parts of the world and is committed to the field of counseling and counselor education as a path to impart positive social change. As a professor, author, executive, and mother of 12 (10 adopted from all over the world), she has significant experience in therapeutic, educational, and advocacy arenas. She utilizes a combination of social justice, cognitive-behavioral (REBT and ACT), and trauma-informed treatment modalities. What makes her work here different than other counseling is the integration of martial arts/self-defense theory (and training) within the therapeutic environment. She offers traditional counseling services alongside opportunities to train in Krav Maga, to empower your mind and soul in counseling sessions while engaging in body work to promote both healing and self-defense skills.

Thad Oliver, PhD, LADAC, CPRS

Thad Oliver is a clinician and consultant in the field of addiction and family systems. He serves as consultant to the Tennessee Department of Health’s Southeast TN High-Impact Area STEPS Project (SE TN Emergency Dept Protocols for SUD). He is also a private practitioner of alcohol and drug abuse counseling and consulting through Dark Horse Counseling of Brentwood, Tennessee. His current research and treatments focus on international and multicultural approaches to addiction: meditation, fabulation, constructive living, and forest therapy. He holds a PhD in Political Science from The University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa, where he taught political theory and studied under political philosopher Michael J. Shapiro. He has lectured at Chiang Mai University, Thailand, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, Oberlin College, Ohio, the Council for Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services, Chattanooga, and various private and nonprofit organizations. He is the author of the experimental novel Artmafia and continues to write numerous grants, articles, and educational content to serve the field of recovery.

Jaimie Homan, MS

Jaimie Homan, MS has ten years of experience counseling children, adults, and adolescents and specializes in trauma and abuse recovery. She is an adoptive mother with experience parenting children with special needs, attachment trauma and acculturation stress. Originally entering the helping field through pastoral ministry, Jaimie counseled and taught women and children in Central Florida, India, and Myanmar. She has been a licensed clinical Christian counselor and a member of the National Christian Counseling Association since 2013. Jaimie opened The Garden Counseling Center in 2014, where she worked primarily with survivors of sexual abuse and children in the foster system. Her interactions with diverse and courageous people in crisis compelled her to pursue a postgraduate degree at the University of Central Florida, where she earned her MSW in 2021 and is now a registered clinical social work intern in Florida.

Jaimie is committed to building a unique collaborative alliance with each client through reflective listening, empathy, respect and humility. She has been trained in EMDR, exposure therapy, trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, and acceptance and commitment therapy. Her approach is solution-focused according to clients’ specific needs. Jaimie believes in her clients’ ability to heal and grow after experiencing all types of hurt; it is the privilege of her life to listen to their stories and provide support as they do so.
